Varanasi city in the Ganga River basin is the greatest sacred city of the Hindus. Over 300,000 people per day visit the city for ritual bathing or sightseeing. The Government of India (GoI) set a target for untreated sewage never to be discharged into the Ganges River after 2020; this mission is called the “Clean Ganga Mission.”
Within this context, the "Ganga Rejuvenation project" was proposed by the GoI through the utilization of a Japanese Government credit loan funded by JICA.
PADECO INDIA oversaw the Organization and Public Health and Outreach components of the project
Tasks under the Organization Component included researching the relevant implementing agencies, and recommendations for an ideal model of personnel management and capacity development system; with recommended maintenance and operation (M/O) training.
The public health and outreach component has focused to take an overview of the present condition and future of the area's public health, in consideration of a high open-defecation rate and rampant direct discharge water from each household.
