Ujjain is a tier 3 city of Madhya Pradesh and one of the most important religious cities in the country by virtue of Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple (1 of 12 Jyotirlingas) and Kshipra River (1 of 4 locations for Kumbh). The mega event Simhasth (Kumbh) is carried out in every 12 years and approx. 7.5 Cr pilgrims visited the city within a duration of 1 month in Simhasth 2016. There was a need to develop a mobility plan which looks at the whole picture and addresses current mobility issues in a holistic manner.
The main objectives of the study were to:
Identify the main challenges and opportunities in terms of mobility. Explore different scenarios for the future development of the area. Engage key stakeholders in the identification and selection process. Shortlist project activities and prepare further studies.
Analyse the current situation in terms of mobility.
Develop a mobility and traffic plan considering all modes of transportation.
Define the main activities to be implemented under MRIDA project.
Literature review of existing plans (Comprehensive Mobility Plan, City Development Plan, existing traffic surveys, etc).
Interviews with key stakeholders (Ujjain Municipal Corporation, Ujjain Development Authority, traffic police, etc.)
Collection and analysis of data related to roadways, parking facilities, public transport, pedestrian facilities, attraction spots for pilgrims.
